Overview

The Qutub Minar is a soaring 73-metre tapering tower of red sandstone and marble begun in 1192 by Qutb-ud-din Aibak. Its fluted storeys are covered in intricate carvings and verses from the Quran.

The surrounding Qutub Complex also holds the rust-resistant Iron Pillar, the Alai Darwaza gateway and the earliest mosque in the region, making it one of Delhi's most rewarding heritage sites.

Know before you go

Entry to the minaret's interior staircase has been closed to the public for safety. Open daily from sunrise to sunset. Carry water as there is limited shade.

The complex is in Mehrauli, South Delhi. The Qutub Minar metro station on the Yellow Line is about 1.5 km away, followed by a short auto-rickshaw ride.
