Overview

Elephanta Island lies in Mumbai harbour and is home to a network of cave temples carved out of solid basalt between the 5th and 8th centuries. The caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site dedicated primarily to Lord Shiva.

The highlight is the monumental Trimurti, a three-headed sculpture of Shiva as creator, preserver and destroyer. Your guided day trip includes the scenic ferry ride from the Gateway of India and a tour of the main cave complex.

Know before you go

Ferries do not operate on Mondays when the caves are closed, and may be suspended during the monsoon. There is a climb of around 120 steps to reach the caves; palanquins are available for hire.

How to reach

Ferries depart from the jetty beside the Gateway of India in Colaba, South Mumbai. The crossing to Elephanta Island takes about an hour each way.
